Way back in the day if you wanted a sign it was made by hand and patience like most good things. A warm and human quality instantly given of which reveals a brushstroke kind of choreography.

No match for machine-made mass produced directives that boss where to park, where to pass, warn of a big-toothed dog, and come along with change. Although man-made, too, can be beautiful.

There’s an imperfect beauty to signs of yonder — handmade or not — that creates an aesthetic landscape of visual pleasure. Bonds us to the social, cultural, and historical past. Keeps personality kicking around. Gives us an intangible feeling and vital sense of spirit that reminds us of what roots us.

Projects like Mile End Type are necessary, “as a visual archive to celebrate and preserve the character of the neighbourhood for posterity, in the face of rampant gentrification”, as Kevin says.
